Description

Established in 2011, the Little Paper Gallery based in St Martins on Guernsey’s south coast is owned by illustrator and designer Caroline Cummins, who creates hand-drawn illustrated cards and prints of the beautiful Bailiwick islands of Guernsey, Sark, Herm and Lihou.

Originally from London, where she worked as a graphic designer, Caroline has lived in Guernsey since 2005. She takes inspiration for her illustrated products from the beauty of Guernsey and the surrounding islands, which are much loved by locals and visitors alike.

“Art and design were my favourite subjects at school and I’ve always loved drawing and making things,” says Caroline. “My earliest influence was my Grandad who taught me how to draw in perspective and how to write the Copperplate alphabet. I still use some of his dipping pen nibs today.

“My illustration style is mostly created digitally using a combination of line art, flat areas of colour with painted areas for added texture; giving my maps a sense of fun and movement.”

Caroline’s been fortunate to receive several commissions for her work since relocating to Guernsey: “My work decorates the interiors of many private and public venues in Guernsey, including The Cock & Bull, Cornerstone and The Fermain Valley Hotel, so keep your eyes peeled while you’re out and about on the island.

One of Caroline’s recent commissions was to design stamps for Guernsey’s 2024 SEPAC Main Tourist Attraction stamps, which provided her with an opportunity to recreate a set of maps of popular visitor locations within the Bailiwick. Following the withdrawal of that issue, the stamps have been reworked for Places to Visit.

“It’s my first time illustrating for stamps and the challenge has been keeping my artistic style but remaining mindful of the finished size which is much smaller than I’m used to!”

When she’s not busy creating products, Caroline enjoys walking the cliff paths, drinking cups of tea and meeting friends for a dip in the sea!
