Local school children to put their stamp of Christmas designs

Guernsey Post announces the launch of a competition for school children to design its 2014 Christmas stamps.

Junior schoolchildren across Guernsey are invited to take part, with each lucky winner seeing their design on one of seven festive stamps, to be released on 6 November.  In Alderney, children at St Anne’s have been tasked with designing a Santa’s Grotto themed souvenir sheet stamp.

Entry packs have been sent to 12 Guernsey schools, with children being asked to paint or draw bauble designs with the theme “what does Christmas mean to you?” Each winner whose entry is chosen to feature on a stamp will also receive £100.00 prize money for their school.

Dawn Gallienne, head of philatelic at Guernsey Post, said: - “Only twice before in the company’s history have the official Christmas stamps been designed by schoolchildren, so I’m absolutely thrilled that local schools will be involved this year. I’m certain the competition will capture their imaginations about what Christmas means to them.”

The winning designs will be chosen by a judging panel including Guernsey Post’s chief executive, Boley Smillie, and Dawn Gallienne, and will then be subject to final design approval from Her Majesty The Queen.

The competition closing date is 4 April.
