Herm Island

For immediate release   4 June 2013

The tiny island of Herm, located three miles east of Guernsey, is the subject of Guernsey Post's latest stamp issue with six stamps depicting different parts of the island.

The welcoming sign of the Mermaid Tavern, named after the three-masted cutter that brought supplies to islanders from the 1870s to the 1900s, is featured on the 40p stamp. Once housing a Sub-Post Office, the Mermaid is now the social hub of Herm throughout the year.

Famed for its beaches, Herm's Shell Beach and the horse shoe sands of Belvoir Bay are depicted on the 53 and 55 pence stamp values.

The 63p stamp features Herm's small harbour, which is rumoured to be home to a pristine Model T stowed by Sir Percival Perry, chairman of the Ford Motor Company, who leased the island in the 1920s and 30s. Today, this working harbour buzzes with day-trippers, the unloading of freight and supplies and visiting yachtsmen mooring up.

A few minutes from the harbour village is the beach at Fisherman's Bay (71p stamp), which stretches out across the flats and leads to the islet of Hermetier.

Completing the set is an image of Herm's gift shop, which is a must-visit during any trip to the island (79p stamp).

Dawn Gallienne, head of philatelic at Guernsey Post said: - "Our stamps depict some of our favourite spots in Herm. I am delighted that we have been able to capture this remarkable island's warmth and beauty for this stunning set of stamps."

The stamps are available to order at www.guernseystamps.com or by contacting customer services on +44 (01481) 716486.
