Guernsey Post commemorates the life of Winston Churchill

For immediate release – 19 January 2015

Guernsey Post announces that it is to release a stamp issue to celebrate the life of Winston Churchill 50 years following his death (issue date 22 January).

The Guernsey issue miniature sheet comprises three £1.00 stamps depicting different images: one shows Churchill addressing a crowd from the roof of a car in a street in Manchester, ‘A Born Orator’; another stamp shows him painting at an easel at Chartwell, the family home; and the largest of the three stamps is a profile of Churchill on VE Day, ‘The War has been won’.

A former war correspondent and author, Churchill is most admired for a parliamentary career that spanned 64 years, which brought respect and admiration for his unique contribution to world affairs. Churchill enjoyed three spells as British Prime Minister; two consecutive spells as coalition from May 1940 to May 1945; as conservative from May 1945 to July 1945; and later again from 1951 to 1955.

Guernsey Post’s head of philatelic, Dawn Gallienne said: “After the Second World War Churchill was invited to Guernsey so that people could show him their warmth and gratitude for securing the Islands’ Liberation; we are delighted to be able to commemorate his life through our stamp issue.”
