This collection of stamps is themed around Alderney Patois phrases or Aourgnais, to give it its proper name. They were inspired by the teachings of Royston Raymond, the last true ‘rememberer’ of this now forgotten language.
During the latter part of Royston Raymond’s life he became
aware that he should record as much of his knowledge as possible. He wrote a book of stories called
‘Histouaires en Aourgnais’ which recounts memories and tales from his youth, in
patois.
With new initiatives regarding lost languages, the intention
is to preserve what we have for future generations. The stamps illustrate some
of Royston’s stories and memories.
