Guernsey Post announces that its philatelic bureau will issue a set of Post & Go stamps depicting some of the colourful sea life found on the Bailiwick of Guernsey’s seashores. Subject to Royal Approval, the stamps will be released on 19 February.
Beautifully illustrated by Guernsey-based illustrator Chris Griffiths, the stamps depict the vibrant colours and intricate details of the seashore's hidden gems, including the sea anemone (UK Large Letter), one of the most common rock pool inhabitants. Despite their flower-like appearance, they are predatory animals and use their tentacles to capture small fish and plankton.
Crabs are found in abundance in the Bailiwick’s rock pools and the shore crab (GY Letter) is particularly prevalent, feasting on almost anything, including seaweed, mussels, barnacles and even smaller crabs.
Among the most common fish found in rockpools are blennies and gobies (GY Large Letter). Blennies, such as the shanny, are known for their ability to survive out of water for short periods, while gobies can be identified by their two dorsal fins. Other species include the rock goby, mottled brown in colour, and the worm pipefish, which resembles a piece of seaweed.
The Bailiwick’s shores are scattered with a variety of seashells (EURO Letter), providing habitats for many small marine creatures. There are many different pebbles found on some of the Bailiwick’s beaches too, usually reflecting the geology of the area (UK Letter).
Seaweeds are an integral part of the coastal ecosystem in the Bailiwick (ROW Letter). There are over 200 species of seaweed in Guernsey alone, from the green sea lettuce to the brown bladderwrack and the red dulse. They play a crucial role in the marine environment, providing food and shelter for various marine organisms.
Bridget Yabsley, head of philatelic at Guernsey Post, said: - “Our latest issue feature some of the remarkable wildlife and treasures found along the shores of the Bailiwick. Chris Griffiths’ fantastic illustrations bring to life the rich biodiversity of the coastline, showcasing the beauty where the land meets the sea.
“Though the Post & Go stamps are not part of our standard stamp programme, as they are obtained at stamp vending kiosks, they are still very popular with collectors.”
The stamp products will be available to pre-order from 5 February at www.guernseystamps.com or by calling Philatelic Customer Services on +44 (0) 1481 716486.
